Tauragė is situated on the Jūra River,
close to the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast, and not far from the Baltic Sea coast.
In Lithuanian, Tauragė is a conjunction of two words: Tauras which means aurochs, and ragas which means horn, hence its coat of arms. T
he city is known as Tauroggen in German, as Taurogi in Polish, and טאווריק/Tovrik in Yiddish.

Taurica - The Tauric Chersonese
was the name by which the Crimea was known to the Greeks and Romans.
The Greeks named the region after its inhabitants, the Tauri: Ταυρική Χερσόνησος (Taurikē Khersonesos) or Χερσόνησος Ταυρική (Khersonesos Taurikē), "Tauric peninsula". Chersonesus Taurica is the Latin version of the Gree...k name (Chersonese literally means "peninsula"). I tūkstantmetyje pr. m. e. Kryme gyveno taurų
(pagal jų pavadinimą Kalnų Krymas dar vadinama Taurija arba Tauride) ir skitų gentys.
VI-V a. pr. m. e. graikai čia įkūrė savo kolonijas. V a. pr. m. e. Kerčės rajone susidarė Bosforo valstybė, III a. pr. m. e. Stepių Kryme – Skitų valstybė.
Prieš pat erų sandūrą dalį pusia...salio užgrobė Roma. III-IV a. į Krymą veržėsi gotai, hunai ir kitos gentys, Bosforo ir Skitų valstybės žlugo.
Nuo IV-V a. pusiasalis pateko Bizantijos įtakos sferon, čia formavosi įvairios nedidelės valstybėlės, iš kurių stambiausia – Teodoro kunigaikštystė (XIII-XV a.). Krymo rytinė dalis nuo X a. priklausė Kijevo Rusiai.
Tuo metu Kryme gyveno skitų, taurų, gotų, sarmatų, alanų, chazarų, pečenegų palikuonys, pakrantėse – dar ir slavai bei graikai. XIII a. įsiveržė mongolai-totoriai, susiformavo Aukso Ordos vasalinė valstybė.
